Why a comparison you ask? Simple….we wanted to give you an overall view of AutoTrader.com, AllTheRides and Craigslist to see how they fare against each other.

Thus, we took the liberty of doing a little research on all three sites and came up with a short (and maybe sweet, depending on whose “camp” you are in) comparison summarizing the features each site offers.

AutoTrader.com

  • Cost to list a car for sale - Not free
  • Advanced search capability - Yes
  • Duration of car ad - List until sold
  • Statistics provided - Only to dealers
  • Ability to filter dealer and private sale ads - No
  • Number of images allowed - Up to 10
  • Fraud Management - Somewhat
  • Biggest Strength - Very popular as it has been active for over 10 years
  • Biggest Weakness - Some say it is too big for its own self and heavy emphasis on dealer ads plus cost.

Craigslist.com

  • Cost to list a car for sale - Free
  • Advanced search capability - No
  • Duration of car ad - List until sold but ad gets pushed down usually within the first day
  • Statistics provided - None
  • Ability to filter dealer and private sale ads - Yes
  • Number of images allowed - 4 but with HTML support
  • Fraud Management - Flagging system
  • Biggest Strength - The ability to allow users to add listings with ease plus it being free
  • Biggest Weakness - Fraud invested listings and scams along with minimal exposure.

AllTheRides.com

  • Cost to list a car for sale - Free
  • Advanced search capability - Yes
  • Duration of car ad - List until sold
  • Statistics provided - Both dealers and private sellers
  • Ability to filter dealer and private sale ads - Yes

  • Fraud Management -Flagging system
  • Biggest Strength - The combination of the best elements of most classified sites plus focus on community
  • Biggest Weakness - Too new in the market and so not as many listings as Craigslist or Autotrader
